A sign of the times is that an increasing number of households include more than two generations. In this case a household that consisted of two parents and two children was expanding to include the grandparents.

Our clients own a ranch that had a lower basement level with a garage and family room opening to grade. In order to provide the grandparents with a sense of having their own space a second master suite was needed, and the existing master suite required some updating.

Merely reconfiguring the footprint of the existing ranch was not going to achieve the desired goals, so the clients opted to turn their ranch into a two-story colonial. This added 1800 sf of living space to the existing home. The new design created two new baths, three generous new bedrooms, a sitting room and a bonus room that provided enough additional living space to more than adequately accommodate the extended family.
