A New Addition for the Whole Family
HUB Design/Build recently completed a new addition, which included
a master bedroom suite, new master bathroom, kitchen and family
room. Additionally, a new deck was constructed to integrate
with the Koi pond at the rear of the house. This was a particularly
intricate job as there was a lot of re-alignment work that needed
to be accomplished as the project got under way. When we became
involved, the property was taking on water so a French drain
was installed. Once all the preliminary work was completed,
the cosmetic transformation process began. First, we will focus
on the master bathroom: |
|
The picture to the right shows us the bath/whirlpool. This whirlpool
has six jets and an in-line heater to keep the water at just
the right temperature. All of the tub's hardware; faucets, tub
spout, valves, and hand shower, are by Dornbracht. The tile
surround, rear wall back splash, shower enclosure and floor,
are all tiled with 12" limestone tiles that contributes to an
overall feeling of earthy warmth. |
 |
|
The next picture is of the shower enclosure. But this is not
an ordinary shower stall. The enclosure doubles as a steam room.
Within the shower there are 2 Grohe body sprays, a Dornbracht
ceiling mounted rainhead, and a steam head for the SteaMist
steam generator. The same tile used for the whirlpool surround
and the floor is used on the interior walls of the shower. And
notice the intricate tile detail work at the top of the shower
enclosure, on the inside of the shower and around the whirlpool.
These accent tiles are hematite. There is also a bench within
the enclosure so one may sit down to enjoy the relaxing effects
of a long steam bath. |

The picture at right shows an overview of the vanity area. The
vanity has double porcelain sinks with a cut limestone counter
top. The medicine cabinets, light bars and mirror are all by
Robern. Satin nickel towel bars, robe hooks and open towel ring
are by Ginger. One final touch was added to this incredible
bathroom, and that was a skylight. This helps maintain the feeling
of spaciousness and increases the warm feeling that this room
imparts to its owners and to any visitors that come to the owner's
house. |
 |
|
Now we move on to the kitchen. This is a truly captivating addition to this house. It provides large windows for light and incorporates a beautiful fireplace for that truly homey feeling when sitting around the kitchen table during cold winter nights. |
 |
|
This is a large addition to the back of the original house,
which is approximately 50 years old. The house itself is a two
story brick colonial in Radnor Township. The owners wanted an
addition that would blend in with the older charm of the house
yet create a new feeling within. This was achieved through the
use of traditional materials on the exterior of the house and
through the use of expertly crafted materials on the inside
of the house. |
 |
This
unified feeling is evident in the openness of this kitchen as it extends
into the newly constructed family room by way of a large opening over
the fireplace and the expanded kitchen entryway. Incidentally, the
fireplace can also be seen from the family room and has a two-sided
granite surround.
|
The picture at right shows an overview of the work area. The
refrigerator, to the left of the double ovens, is a Sub Zero.
All of the cabinets have a Chaddsford Wheat finish. There is
also plenty of lighting to allow ease of work at various cooking
or food preparation-areas around the kitchen. |
 |
|
The next three pictures illustrate the deck that was added to
the back of the house. One can readily see that the deck is
fully integrated with the backyard environs, which include a
Koi pond and wonderful natural plantings and landscaping that
the owners have invested in. All through the elements of the
project that HUB Design/Build has accomplished, an easy flow of
man-made and natural materials exists. The sense of comfort
and relaxation that radiates from both the interior and the
exterior spaces truly offer an oasis away from the stresses
of everyday life. |

|
|
The last picture shows part of the master bedroom suite. This
is furnished with antiques and reproductions, which blend quite
nicely with the new addition. There are skylights and a working
gas fireplace to lend a homey, warm feeling to another area
of this family's oasis. |
 |
This
addition is another fine example of the kind of work for which HUB
Design/Build is becoming known on the Main Line. We spent a lot of time
working very closely with this family in order to provide them with
a completed project that reflects their own tastes and vision. It
is something of which all involved are extremely proud. |
